Dowsing Accuracy

(A transcript of the video is below, if you prefer to read.)

Dowsing Accuracy

Dowsing accuracy is, of course, of major concern to all dowsers. It is also of interest to those who have not yet started to dowse. They ask questions like ‘how accurate is pendulum dowsing?, or they wonder if dowsing is accurate in general.

What they are probably thinking when they ask these sorts of questions is whether a dowser is always accurate or not, always gets the right answer.

This, of course, is impossible. Nobody is always right every time they do something. Top athletes who train and train and train and get paid very well to perform a small range of activities, even they are not 100% perfect. So it is not fair to ask if dowsing is 100% accurate, because it’s not fair to define accuracy in that way. The honest answer to the question of accuracy is that, for some dowsers, in a very narrow range of dowsing activity, they can be remarkably accurate, somewhere in the 90% range.

Another honest way to answer this question is to say that it depends. It depends on who is dowsing and what they are dowsing about. Dowsing is a skill. And that means that it can be developed and improved. A newcomer to dowsing would vary greatly in their accuracy because they are still learning and they haven’t yet found the one area they can excel in.

It can also depend on what is being dowsed. If it is something like water dowsing, which most people have heard of, then it is easy to measure the accuracy. After all, the water is going to be there or it is not going to be there. And if it is there, then the flow rate can be measured and you can test it to see if it is drinkable. Those are easy ways to measure accuracy.

But, what of other areas of dowsing, other ways in which it can be used? Some, like dowsing vitamins or discovering energy lines on the earth, are not so easy to measure for accuracy. The vitamins might well be working, but if you’re also changing diet and the way you exercise, that could be the reason for much of the success you think they have. And, with something invisible, like lines of energy, that pretty much has to be taken on faith by any onlooker.

So if you are a dowser and someone who doesn’t dowse asks you how accurate is pendulum dowsing, or the accuracy of dowsing in general, then probably the best response you can have is to get them dowsing and let them decide for themselves.

Happy Dowsing!

Dowsing Confidence vs. Dowsing Ego

What's The Difference Between Ego & Confidence?

What's the difference between dowsing confidence and ego in dowsing? Confidence in most cases is based on experience and an accurate evaluation of your skills. Sometimes we lack self-confidence when we deserve to be confident. Other times, we might be overconfident. But by and large, confidence is based on accurately gauging your competence in a skill. With most dowsers I know, lack of confidence is a major stumbling block to mastery. They know they aren't masterful, so they lack confidence.

Since confidence in our performance of a skill like dowsing is based on experience, training and practice, the more training and practice you do, the better your confidence gets. This of course assumes you are training and practicing well. Finding a good mentor will help you with that.

Ego is false confidence, believing you are skilled at something when you are not. People get into ego when they are fearful of being judged or want to project a more favorable picture of their skill level than what is true. Most of the time, ego comes from overcompensating for a feeling of not being good enough. Often, it is because they won't commit to doing the work, but they want to be perceived as masterful dowsers.

I see people acting from ego in the spiritual community, bragging about what great healers they are or saying they are stupendous dowsers. If someone is constantly talking about how great they are or how accurate their dowsing is, they are coming from ego. Confident dowsers will tell you they make mistakes; egotistical dowsers will avoid admitting that.

Dowsing Confidence Is Good; Ego Is Bad

We all act out of ego now and then. It doesn't make you a bad person per se. It's just not a good habit. It won't endear you to anyone. People pull back when someone is acting from ego.

There's no need for ego. You can replace it with confidence. Build confidence by honing your skill. Pretty soon, you'll be just fine with assessing your level of competence in dowsing accurately.

Always keep learning and growing. No one is 100% accurate with dowsing. We aren't. You aren't. But you can hone your skill and become highly accurate if you are willing to practice. Confidence takes work, but it's worth it. You can become a dowsing ninja if you want to.

You Are Not Normal!

Look Around

Next time you’re out shopping, and waiting in line to pay, take a moment and have a look at the other people there. It’s refreshing.

No two are the same.

No two look the same.

No two share the exact same history

No two act or react the same

And yet there is something called ‘normal’.

Normal is a useful tool to group people together and to get them to act or learn in the same way. Because it’s easier to teach everyone in a group the exact same thing at the exact same time.

Not that that guarantees anything like a ‘normal’ response, or even that everyone in that group will learn the same thing in the same way to the same depth of understanding as the person they sit next to.

It’s much, much harder to teach one person at a time in a fashion and style appropriate to their needs. Yet, if you want to really learn something as well as you can, that is what it takes in most cases.

So, the next time anyone tells you that the correct way to dowse is in a specific way, using a specific ritual or tool or phrase or whatever, just yawn politely and tell yourself, you are not normal.

Normal and you…

You are never going to be normal.

You can’t be normal if you tried.

You are exactly who you are and nobody else.

And that means you need to learn to dowse correctly, for yourself. Using techniques which work for you. And you know they work for you because you tried them out and evaluated them.

That makes you not normal

Don’t attempt to be normal, ever.  And if you ever tend to forget that, remember what your fellow shoppers are like… unique!

Did you begin by thinking dowsing was not normal? Or was it always a normal thing for you? Let us know in the comments section below

Dowsing and Healing

Confusion All Round!

Dowsing and healing seem to go together a lot in peoples' minds. Hands up all those who have heard (or used) a phrase similar to the following: “I used my pendulum to remove the issue/problem/energy/whatever”. It's a fairly commonly used phrase.

And it's completely wrong.

The only connection between a dowsing tool and doing anything like healing is the person holding the tool. Doesn't matter what tool it is; a gold-plated zirconium diamond studded L-rod or a fishing weight on the end of a piece of string. It doesn't matter. I guarantee that if you laid that tool down beside someone who was ill, it wouldn't do a thing.

And that means that it's not the tool. It's the person holding it. Nothing else.

Dowsing and healing are not the same thing.

Dowsing and healing is really a simple idea

I don't know why this is such a confusing point in dowsing. But it's really very plain and very simple. The healing (of whatever type or design or method or whatever) is down to the person, not the tool. Dowsing and healing are two different things.

First you have the tool. A tool is simply an indicator. It is nothing else. It shows reactions, your reactions, to whatever it is you are focusing on. Yes/No, This way/That way, Here/There and so on.

But holding the tool is a person? And that's where the power lies! That's where the real stuff is happening. A tool doesn't do it; the person holding the tool does it, and the tool might show when it's finished, or whatever. But it doesn't do it by itself.

If you want a quick and easy explanation about this whole subject, take a quick look at this short video about dowsing and healing.

I don't know why this confusion exists, but I can guess. First reason is sloppy thinking or sloppy talking, or even worse, sloppy teaching! Confusing the reaction of the tool with the intention.

Second reason is that it's way too scary to admit to ourselves that we are actually capable of doing anything amazing. Far easier and more comforting to give credit to a tool in our hands than the focus in our heads.

It's easier to be powerless than powerful.

But that's hiding from who we are. And that is easy.

The hard part is accepting who we are.

And you thought dowsing was just about dangling a pendulum!

Dowsing and healing are two different things. But you might not agree. Let us know in the comments section below

The Problems of Learning to Dowse

In The Beginning

When you were learning to dowse, chances are you were told how to hold a pendulum, how to ask a question and even what sort of response was a ‘yes' or a ‘no'. And all the class, assuming you were in a class, were told the same thing.

Which is fine, except….

The problem, as I see it, is that nobody is the same as anyone else. We all think and act differently. We all have different strengths and weaknesses, yet we are all expected to do the same thing and get the same result. (Don't get me started on education!!)

Learning to dowse…YOUR way!

It's for this very reason, that you are an individual, that neither Maggie nor I say that you HAVE to dowse in one certain way, following one specific set of instructions, as though you were a computer to be programmed.

Sure, we'll suggest certain things, certain approaches, and try to steer people way from doing things we have discovered to cause problems in one way or another, but as to the actual dowsing…. We try to let everyone get to their best result going down the road they choose. For us, that's what learning to dowse is all about.

Anyone with even a tiny interest in the the brain and the way it works will have discovered that what goes on inside our heads, the way we see and interact with the world, can be hugely different between two people.

In dowsing terms, that could mean that, where I get a sensation in the back of my head telling me that I'm in the groove, so to speak, for you, it could be you hear a sound, or your right knee aches briefly. It could be anything at all. But the point is, no matter what happens to you when you dowse, it is you who is aware of it, sensing it.

So, next time you hear of the perfect and foolproof way of getting the right answer, of dowsing the ‘correct way', by all means give it a try. It might work for you, for a while. It might not ever work for you.

But, and here's the beautiful thing, it might get you thinking about what does work….for YOU!

Dowsing Is Simple. But Easy?

What Is Dowsing?

If you take a moment to think about it, dowsing is simple. I mean really simple! You ask questions and you get answers.

What could be simpler than that?

Except you should never equate simple with easy.

Just because something is simple does not mean it is easy. For example, think of something like rock climbing. It's really very simple. You make sure that you have three points of contact at all times and you keep going up until you've reached the top. That sounds simple enough, doesn't it?

But easy? Far from it!

Dowsing is Simple. But Easy?

And that's just how it is with dowsing. The concept of dowsing is simple to explain to anyone. But, when you start to dowse, you realize that there all sorts of things which need to be going on, behind the scenes as it were, in order for it to work. And, by ‘work', I mean , work well and consistently, not just have hiccups of success.

In rock climbing, you need to have strength, stamina and flexibility (not to mention a head for heights, which disqualifies me), as well as appropriate equipment and fellow climbers for help and encouragement. After all, you don't want to keep falling off, do you?

In dowsing, there's the mental attitude, the question itself, the ability to listen to or receive the answer, the environment you're dowsing in, to name just a few of the most obvious ones. There are plenty of other issues as well!

That recognition, that something can be simple, but not easy, is something which crops up time and again in life. And because it crops up, the difference tends to get blurry.

After all, how simple is it to lose weight? Just eat less, right? Simple? Yes! Easy? Heck no!

And I think it might be that very problem, the ‘simple but not easy' problem, which lures a lot of people into dowsing but then leaves them high and dry. Because, what do you do, where do you go, after you've found out you can get an answer from your tool?

Not enough people recognize the trap of simple but not easy.

What do YOU think?

A Good Dowsing Question Is A Precious Thing!

Questions And Answers

“You don't see yet, Genry, why we perfected and practice Foretelling?”
“To exhibit the perfect uselessness of knowing the answer to the wrong question.”
The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin

A lot of time is spent in dowsing classes on asking a good dowsing question. Because your answer is only as good as your question.

Learning how to ask a good dowsing question is complex. It's part art and part science. It's about learning to listen to your intuition while also tapping into your rational mind. In fact, there is so much to know about that subject, you could probably create a two-day workshop on it.

To save you the trouble of searching for a two-day workshop on making a good dowsing question, we've written a book on it instead, full of questions for you and your dowsing.

Dowsing accuracy and confidence go hand in hand. And getting ‘wrong' answers can erode your confidence. Can you remember when you first started dowsing (or maybe you're new, and this is something you've experienced) and you were so excited about using dowsing? And you rushed off and started dowsing about this and that, and it was so much fun to be getting yes and no answers to questions you could never have known the answer to?

But then you started finding out that some of your answers weren't right. And each time you got a ‘wrong' answer, you felt worse. You doubted your dowsing. You doubted your talent. And it almost seemed that doubt led to more mistakes. Has this happened to you?

A good dowsing question is something you grow into

Honestly, when you are learning anything, there is a learning curve. You make mistakes. You make course corrections. Like learning to skate or play piano. You don't expect to be perfect immediately. But somehow, with dowsing, people get discouraged if they make mistakes. They start thinking maybe they can't dowse. Or worse yet, they think maybe dowsing is fake and doesn't work.

Technique and practice are so important in mastering any skill. Dowsing is a skill. You can master it. But you need to know proper technique, and you must practice (unless you're the Mozart of dowsing :)).

Take the time to make a good dowsing question

Taking the time to make a good dowsing question and learning all the factors that go into it can seem boring or tedious. You may be so eager to get dowsing, that you want to skip that stuff. But don't. Take the time to learn how to ask a good dowsing question. Then your answers will be much more accurate. That will cause you to have confidence. And that leads you to enjoy using dowsing more and more.

In the posts on this site, there are often suggestions about asking a good dowsing question. So wander around the site and feel free to add a comment on them. You're welcome to join the forums as well!

For now, I'll just start by saying the first step in asking a good dowsing question is to get a pen and paper and make a list about what your are asking about. Why are you asking this? Why do you want to know? What do you want to know? List the factors how, when, who, where, what and why about your subject.

A good dowsing question is usually long. Writing your question down, at least at first, is helpful. That way, you don't have to focus on remembering it when you dowse. You read it a few times, then focus on getting into a dowsing state and ask, “What's the answer to this question?”

Then write your answer down. It's best if you can confirm the truth of the answer, as that helps you learn.

Don't assume your dowsing was ‘wrong' if the answer appears wrong. Take time to try and see why that could have been the correct answer to YOUR question. In other words, how was the question weak or incomplete, causing that to be a correct answer to that question? That way, you can improve next time.

Pendulum Dowsing Exercise #1: Restaurant

A Simple Pendulum Dowsing Exercise

One of the most overlooked benefits of dowsing is that you can (and should!) be using it in your daily life. Pendulum dowsing exercises build your confidence while giving yourself a tool you can use over and over.

This pendulum dowsing exercise is for all levels of dowsers. The process used in this exercise can be applied to many other situations with success.

Almost everyone goes out to a restaurant now and then. This exercise includes how to choose the best restaurant and how to pick the best item on the menu or wine list.

In order for this work well, you have to be willing to change. For instance, you have to be willing to change and go to a different place to your regular restaurant. Secondly, you have to be willing to change and eat something you wouldn't usually choose. Don't worry! You're not going to get something you hate. After all, you're going to be dowsing with a very specific question in mind in this pendulum dowsing exercise, so you're going to be safe!

For me, I can still remember wanting a lovely juicy steak, and I ended up with barbecue chicken! But, Oh! Was that good!!! I would never have ordered that if I had just done the usual thing and got what my eye was drawn to and what my stomach was telling me to get.

So, go ahead and download the pendulum dowsing exercise and give it a try. It really is a superb way of learning to trust your dowsing, because you eat the answer! :-)

And, of course, you absolutely do NOT have to use a pendulum if that is not your tool of choice. This pendulum dowsing exercise works just as well as a deviceless dowsing exercise or a bobber dowsing exercise.
