The pendulum is probably the most widely used dowsing tool today. They come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes, materials, weights and have different types of chains. Most dowsers have a variety of pendulums for different uses.
Our belief on this site is that everyone can learn to dowse. Of course, that does not mean that everyone will be expert dowsers from the beginning. But, everyone can improve their dowsing skills over time.
Before the pendulum, there were many ways of using dowsing. This slide shows an illustration of some of the types of tools used about 300 years ago; in this case, wooden rods are shown

This is a photo taken in Paris back at the turn of the last century when there was a call for dowsers to come and see if they could be successful. This woman was one of many photographed during that day. The test was to see whether or not dowsers could discover the underground galleries which had been carved out over the centuries caused by mining for....can you guess? They were mining for Plaster of Paris! Many of the dowsers were able to find both the empty spaces and the supporting walls underground.
Here is an engraving of what is probably still the activity most closely associated with dowsing: finding water. A rather respectably-dressed gentleman is being observed by interested and probably skeptical onlookers. The attitude of the rod would suggest that he is the act of locating the spot to dig.
